1. Central Units with Local Extensions

• Applicable Series: 40 and 50.

• Expansion:

  • Up to 6 local extension units can be added.

  • Extension unit types: binary or analog.

  • See Figure 1-1 for layout.

2. Central Units with CS 31 Bus

• Applicable Series: 50 and 90.

• Expansion via remote units connected on CS 31 bus.

• The controlling central unit = MASTER.

Bus Specifications

• Max bus length:

  • 500 m without amplifier.

  • 2000 m with 3 amplifiers (1 NCB/NCBR per 500 m).

• Max connection points (SLAVES): 31.

Possible Slave Devices

• Remote unit with extension options:

  • Max 6 extension units.

  • Up to 8 analog input channels + 8 analog output channels.

• Simple remote unit (binary or analog I/O).

• Remote TCAD display.

• ABB NCSA-01 variable speed drive interface.

• High-speed counter unit.

• Another central unit (50 series with extensions, 90 series, or legacy 30 series).

• Any other device supporting CS 31 communication (Figure 1-2).

Slave Occupation Rules

• Binary-only slave = 1 connection point.

• Binary + analog slave = 2 connection points.

3. Analog Expansion Limits by Series

50 Series:

• Up to 31 remote analog input units.

• Up to 31 remote analog output units.

• Up to 15 extensible remote units (ICMK14F1) with AI/AO + 1 extra AI/AO unit
  → (15 × 2 + 1 = 31).

• Mixed binary/analog allowed within these limits.

90 Series:

• Up to 12 remote analog input units.

• Up to 12 remote analog output units.

• Or 12 slaves with analog extensions.

4. Additional Options

• CS 31 bus can be configured as Modbus® master or slave (see Chapter 7).

5. Cabling Considerations

• Without remote units → standard electrical wiring.

• With remote units (AC 31 + multiple cubicles) → follow mandatory cabling rules (see Chapter 4).
