Operator Panel Thermal Management Guidelines

In most industrial control systems, the ambient temperature surrounding the operator panel is often significantly higher than the temperature inside the device cabinet. Proper thermal management is therefore essential to ensure reliable operation and maximize equipment lifespan.

Temperature Distribution Inside the Cabinet

In tall control cabinets containing multiple heat-generating components, the temperature at the top of the enclosure can become substantially higher than the theoretical average temperature rise. Heat naturally accumulates in the upper section of the cabinet, creating localized hot spots that can negatively affect sensitive electronic devices.

Since electronic components are highly sensitive to temperature, excessive heat can dramatically reduce service life. For example:

An 8–10°C (14–18°F) increase in operating temperature reduces the lifespan of an electrolytic capacitor by approximately 50%.
A 15–20°C (27–36°F) increase can reduce capacitor life to roughly 25% of its expected service life.

Maintaining a stable operating temperature is therefore critical for long-term system reliability.

Cabinet Cooling Recommendations

Thermal analysis software, such as those provided by Rittal, can be used to estimate the average cabinet temperature and determine appropriate cooling solutions.

For reference:

An enamel-coated steel enclosure has a typical radiant heat dissipation value of approximately 5.5 W/m²·°C.

Installing an internal circulation fan is an effective method of reducing temperature differences within the cabinet. Forced-air circulation provides significantly better cooling performance than natural convection.

A commonly recommended solution is:

120 × 120 mm axial cooling fan

Fan Installation Best Practices

For maximum cooling efficiency and extended fan life:

Install the fan in the coolest area of the enclosure, typically near the bottom.
Configure the fan to blow cool air toward the operator panel.
Avoid mounting the fan at the top of the cabinet where it draws hot air upward, as higher operating temperatures will shorten the fan’s service life.

A high-quality ball-bearing axial fan typically offers:

Expected operating life: ≥40,000 hours at 40°C (104°F)
Equivalent to more than four years of continuous operation (typical expected life, not a guaranteed value)

Installing a thermostat-controlled fan further improves efficiency by operating the fan only when additional cooling is required, reducing energy consumption and extending fan lifespan.

Operator Panel Power Dissipation

Modern operator panels significantly reduce power consumption when the display backlight is turned off.

Typical example:

Operating Condition Power Dissipation
Backlight On Approximately 25 W
Backlight Off Approximately 5 W

This represents approximately an 80% reduction in power consumption, helping lower cabinet temperatures.

The operator panel’s power dissipation can be calculated as:

Power Dissipation (W) = Supply Voltage (V) × Operating Current (A)

Under normal operating conditions:

Nearly all supplied electrical power is consumed internally by the operator panel.
External loads receive virtually no power from the panel.
Digital and analog input circuits contribute negligible additional heat generation.

Proper enclosure design, airflow management, and temperature control can substantially improve operator panel reliability, extend component life, and reduce long-term maintenance costs.
