Redundancy Memory Xchange (RMX) Module – Functional Description
Overview
The Redundancy Memory Xchange (RMX) module operates either as:
A node on a reflective memory network, or
A dedicated communication link between CPUs in a redundant RX7i system
When not configured as a redundancy link, the RMX module is functionally equivalent to the IC698CMX016 Memory Xchange module.
Reflective Memory Network Operation
In reflective memory mode, the RMX module provides deterministic, high-speed data sharing among PLCs and other computing devices over a fiber-optic network.
Compatible with 5565 family reflective memory devices
Any write to one node is automatically propagated to all nodes
Supports up to 256 nodes per reflective memory network
Ensures deterministic data consistency across all participating devices
Network Topology
Nodes are connected in a daisy-chained fiber-optic loop
The transmitter of each node connects to the receiver of the next node
The final node completes the loop by connecting back to the first node
This closed-loop architecture ensures continuous data circulation
CPU Redundancy System Operation
When used in an RX7i CPU redundancy system, RMX modules form the data synchronization path between the primary and secondary CPUs.
A complete redundancy communication path consists of:
One RMX module in the primary CPU
One RMX module in the secondary CPU
Two high-speed fiber-optic cables connecting the two modules
The redundancy link must be configured as a two-node ring
No additional reflective memory nodes are permitted on this network
Redundancy Configuration Recommendations
GE strongly recommends configuring two independent redundancy links
Requires four RMX modules (two per CPU)
Provides increased availability and fault tolerance
A single redundancy link configuration is supported
Requires two RMX modules
Offers reduced redundancy protection
Functional Limitations
When configured as a redundancy link, the RMX module cannot be used as a general-purpose Memory Xchange module
Reflective memory network functionality and redundancy link functionality are mutually exclusive modes
