Functional Diagrams
The functional diagrams provide a comprehensive description of the IED (Intelligent Electronic Device) functionality from multiple operational perspectives, including:
Protection functions
Measurement functions
Condition monitoring
Disturbance recording
Control functions
Interlocking logic
The diagrams represent the default IED configuration using simplified logic symbols to illustrate the basic operating principles and signal flow.
External connections to primary electrical equipment are also included, showing the default wiring arrangements for measuring transformers such as:
Current transformers (CTs)
Voltage transformers (VTs)
For directional protection functions, the defined positive measuring direction is toward the outgoing feeder. This ensures consistent interpretation of forward and reverse fault directions.
Functional Diagram Structure
The functional diagrams are divided into individual sections, where each section represents a specific functional entity.
Each functional section contains:
Related protection or control logic
Associated input/output signals
Relevant external connections
Internal IED signal processing paths
The external connections are also separated into functional sections. Only the connections relevant to the specific function being described are shown in each section, improving diagram readability and simplifying engineering analysis.
Protection Function Block Identification
Protection function blocks included in the functional diagrams are identified according to their:
IEC 61850 function name
IEC standardized symbol
ANSI/IEEE protection function number
This provides compatibility with international protection engineering standards and simplifies integration into substation automation systems.
Example:
Identification Description
IEC 61850 Name Protection function identification according to IEC 61850
IEC Symbol Standardized functional symbol
ANSI Number Traditional ANSI/IEEE protection designation
Function Block Instance Numbering
Some protection functions may be used multiple times within the IED configuration.
For example:
PHHPTOC = Three-phase high-set overcurrent protection
When the same function block is instantiated more than once, an instance number is added to distinguish each occurrence.
Example:
Function Block Meaning
PHHPTOC First instance of high-set overcurrent protection
PHHPTOC1 Additional instance
PHHPTOC2 Another configured instance
The numbering starts from one and increases according to the number of configured instances.
If a function block does not have a suffix after the IEC or ANSI designation, it indicates that the function has only been instantiated once in the configuration.
Separation Between Internal Logic and External Connections
The functional diagrams distinguish between:
Internal IED Functionality
Includes:
Protection algorithms
Logic processing
Measurements
Internal signals
Control functions
External Connections
Includes:
CT/VT inputs
Binary inputs (BI)
Binary outputs (BO)
Circuit breaker interfaces
External control signals
The physical boundary of the IED is represented by a dashed line, clearly separating internal processing from external wiring.
Signal Matrix
The Signal Matrix provides a flexible engineering tool that allows users to modify the standard IED configuration according to application requirements.
The IED is delivered from the factory with predefined default connections, including:
Binary inputs (BI)
Binary outputs (BO)
Function-to-function connections
Alarm LED assignments
Users can modify these connections without changing the fundamental protection functionality.
Typical Signal Matrix modifications include:
Assigning external inputs to protection functions
Mapping protection trips to output relays
Changing LED alarm indications
Creating customized internal logic connections
Signal Matrix Views
The Signal Matrix interface is divided into several functional views:
1. Binary Input View
Used for configuring:
External binary input assignments
Control signals
Status indications
Interlocking inputs
Examples:
Circuit breaker position indication
Local/remote selector status
External trip signals
2. Binary Output View
Used for configuring:
Trip outputs
Alarm outputs
Control commands
Examples:
Main trip relay output
Alarm relay activation
Breaker control signals
3. Functions View
Used for configuring internal function-to-function connections.
Functions are identified using IEC 61850 naming conventions, consistent with the functional diagrams.
Examples:
Protection trip → Master trip logic
Protection operation → Disturbance recorder trigger
Alarm signal → LED indication
IEC 61850 Function Naming
The Signal Matrix uses IEC 61850 logical node names to identify functions, providing a standardized method for configuration and engineering.
